The ASP Scheme
The Accredited Service Provider (ASP) scheme is governed by the NSW Department of industry and comprises of three levels; however, we’ll only look at Level 2 in this post.

The person working is none other than an ASP Level 2 electrician. Qualifying electricians can perform certain categories of work within the Level 2. A Level 2 electrician is required to accomplish the following:
- Connecting/ disconnecting your premises from the electricity network.
- Repair or install an underground service line to join your property to the electricity network.
- Repair or install an overhead service line to join your property to the main electricity network and install electricity meters.
- Set up solar meters.
- Upgrading customer/service mains
- Upgrading to a three-phase power supply
- Relocation of the point of attachments
- Installation of power poles
Sub-contractors and employees of a Level 2 ASP electrical service should be fully qualified and registered with the scheme – this will make them eligible to take permission from your local electricity distributor to work on the power lines situated near your property.
How to Get Accreditation?
Typically, accreditation under the ASP Scheme given to the electrician is valid for 12 months, which must be annually renewed. An electrician must satisfy at least one of the below-mentioned criteria to qualify for accreditation at a particular level:
- They must possess an appropriate training qualification from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and must have gone through the relevant training for that particular work level.
- To perform services at their level, they must be registered within the ASP scheme.
- They are a past employee of an NSW electricity distributor and can persuade the authority that they fulfil the requisites of the level.
