What is a Meter Protection Device (MPD)?

A Meter Protection Device (MPD) is an isolation device / over current device for your electricity meter. An MPD is required with every newly installed electricity meter or at times when the meter is upgraded or replaced. A electricity meters needs to be calibrated or replaced roughly once in a 10 year period or as meter type testing might fail a certain meter family.

Most electricity meter panels constructed before 2018 will not have a MPD complaint to today’s regulations set out by the NSW service and installation rules. Due to the change in the rules and an ageing electricity meter the installation of MPDs is fast becoming a nightmare for strata managers and economic stimulus for us level 2 ASPs. These residential blocks and commercial complexes are constructed in a way that multiple electricity meters share the same connection to the power grid. Often this can be seen in strata buildings post 2018. Once the MPD is installed the isolation procedure makes it possible to take one meter offline without taking all meters offline and without disrupting power to the entire building or complex.

Isolation procedure involves the installation of MPD (Meter Protection Device) into your meter board that isolates your meter from the rest of the meters, facilitating it to be upgraded safely and without disrupting the power supply. This procedure is more complex and needs a higher level of electrical certification such as a Level 2 electrician. In some instances, we may require isolating the building to install the MPD.

Who Requests an MPD to be installed?

Usually, you will get a notice from your electricity meter provider specifying “We were unable to replace your electricity meter due to Isolation or shared fuse”. This simply means they were unable to isolate the electricity meter. To replace the meter an approved MPD must be installed.

You might think “Why don’t they just install the MPD?” There are a few reasons they can’t and won’t

The electrician installing the meter does not have the required competency to install the MPD
An isolation might be required with another stakeholder in your building. The meter installing tech is not permitted to isolate other stakeholders.
The meter room might need modification to fit the MPD

Who Can Perform Isolations or Meter Protection Device (MPD) Installations?

Your local electricity network can perform an isolation for your meter provider then your meter provider can install the MPD.

What is the Cost for Isolation Procedure?

The cost for the isolation procedure will depend on the complexity of the work involved and the number of visits it requires completing it.

It is more feasible for the strata retrofit MPDs for the entire building at one time rather than an ad hoc time.
